The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on the Azerbaijani model of multiculturalism

INTRODUCTION
Today the Republic of Azerbaijan is known to be one of the
main multiculturalism centers in the world. As main indicator of
it is the right regulation of ethnic, religious and cultural diversities
in our country. It shows itself in the enhancing of integration
processes in the society. The representatives of different nations,
ethnic groups and religious confessions living in Azerbaijan
unite inside the society they are living in, and integrate into it.
Consequently the possible conflicts to be arisen on the ethnic and
religious backgrounds in the society are prevented, in fact the
multicultural security of the country is established.
There are objective and subjective reasons for Azerbaijan’s
recognition in the field of multiculturalism all over the world. The
objective reasons are connected with historical and geographical
factors.
Historically Azerbaijan has been a multicultural state. As
the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev once
mentioned “Although multiculturalism is a relatively new word
in our lexicon, its traditions have always existed in Azerbaijan
for centuries indeed. Merely, it has been differently called, but the
essence hasn’t changed.” Through all the periods of Azerbaijani
history the representatives of different people, ethnic groups
and religious confessions have always lived peacefully together.
The ethnic minorities settled here have never been subjected to
discrimination or prosecuted for their ethnic, religious or racial
identities or ethnic cultural values by Azerbaijani Turks who form
the majority of the nation.
